Lindos Acropolis: Tickets, the Climb, the Heat and the Best Time of Day

Updated October 8, 2026 · 5 min read

Ancient stone columns and a ruined portico on the Lindos acropolis, with rocky ground in front and a blue sky full of white clouds above

The short answer: go in the first hour after opening or in the last hour or two before closing, bring water, and buy the ticket either on the day or together with a tour that clearly includes it. The site is worth the climb, but it is a hot, exposed hill, and the time of day matters more than any other choice you make.

The climb

You walk up from the village of Lindos. A travel guide puts the climb at around 10 to 15 minutes uphill, on a path that is uneven and can be slippery, with very little shade. Some visitors ride a donkey up, although the guide recommends walking. Wear shoes with grip, not flip-flops.

The ruins at the top include the Temple of Athena Lindia, with views over the village and the bay. How much of the site you can reach on foot is a question for the ticket office on the day, and if anyone in your group has limited mobility, ask the operator or the site before you travel. We will not guess at it here.

Tickets

The price of entry to archaeological sites is set by the Greek Ministry of Culture and listed on its ticket portal, hhticket.gr. Recent listings put the full price at around €20, but check the portal before you go, because prices change.

A few rules reported for the site, again worth confirming on the portal. Reduced tickets are given on site to EU citizens aged 65 and over and to non-EU citizens aged 6 to 25, with valid ID. Since 1 April 2025, EU citizens under 25 and non-EU citizens under 18 are reported to enter free, again on showing ID. Visitors with a disability certificate also enter free. Entry runs in time slots, and there is no guarantee the ticket office has places for the hour you want, which is a good reason to avoid arriving at the busiest time.

The ticket with an optional audio guide costs €22.62 per person, 4.4 stars from 1,597 reviews. That is above the gate price quoted earlier, which is what you pay for booking ahead and for the audio guide. If you are travelling in a group or at a busy time, it saves you the queue; if you arrive at a quiet hour, you may not need it.

Opening hours and the heat

The same guide gives the summer opening hours as 8:00 am to 7:30 pm, with shorter hours in winter. Treat that as a guide and check the portal for your date, because the closing time is what decides how much of a late visit you get.

The guide advises against the middle of the day: between 11:30 am and 4:00 pm the climb becomes very hot in summer. In some past summers Greek authorities have closed archaeological sites for part of the afternoon during heatwaves, so on a very hot day look for notices rather than assuming the site is open.

Two timings work. The first is early, right after the site opens, when the path is cooler and the tour buses have not arrived. The second is late afternoon. The evening transfer to Lindos arrives around 4:30 pm and gives 4 hours, including time for the acropolis; it is €20.25, 4.8 stars from 839 reviews. The morning transfer arrives around 10:45 am, which is already late for the cool hours, so go straight to the acropolis before the village.

With a tour or on your own

The tour listings differ in whether the entrance fee is part of the price, so read the inclusions on the booking page. If you take the Lindos bus tour with free time at €16.31, ask yourself whether you will be buying the ticket separately on top. The full comparison of bus tours, transfers and boats is in Lindos from Rhodes, and the whole range is on the Lindos excursions page, from €14.

What to bring

Water, a hat, and shoes with grip. The guide also suggests combining the visit with a swim at St Paul’s Bay nearby, which is a better use of the hot afternoon than the climb itself.

The honest part

If you only have a few hours in Lindos and the heat is high, the village and the bay are a better use of the middle of the day than the climb. Do the acropolis at the edges of the day and spend the hours in between in the shade or in the water. In autumn the closing time arrives earlier, so a late arrival leaves less time on the hill than in summer.
