Marmaris from Rhodes: Passport, Boat and a Day in Turkey – What the Trip Really Involves

The short answer: it is an easy day trip if your passport is in order and you are happy to spend half of it on your own in a Turkish resort town. The boat is quick, the paperwork is handled at the port, and the optional bus tour with a shopping stop is the part reviewers argue about. Most of what can go wrong happens before you leave the hotel.

What the day looks like

The Marmaris day trip by high-speed boat is the one Marmaris trip from Rhodes we found: €47 per person, 8 hours, 4.2 stars from 1,768 reviews. The booking page rates the guide 4.4, the transport 4.3 and value for money 4.1.

You start at the tourist port of Rhodes. After the port gate, the operator’s ticket kiosk is on your right, and you have to be there one hour before departure. There you show your voucher, collect a boarding pass and go through the first passport control. The catamaran crossing takes about one hour each way, and a reviewer mentions refreshments on board. The booking page does not give a departure time; it shows starting times when you check availability.

The paperwork

This is where the trip differs from a Symi day.

After you book, the operator asks you to send the following through the booking chat: full name, passport or ID number, date of birth, gender, nationality and phone number. Everything has to match your passport or ID card exactly. On the day you must bring the passport or ID card. Greek passengers are told that a valid passport or the new type of Greek ID card is required.

Two more points from the booking page. Some nationalities also need a visa to enter Turkey, so ask your embassy before you pay. And a child travelling with one parent needs a written statement from the second parent.

The page also lists an international port tax: €20 per person aged 3 and over, and €10 for ages 0 to 2. A reviewer describes paying an entry and exit fee at the port in Rhodes, so check whether the price you see already includes it, and budget for it if it does not. Rules like these change, so the booking page is the reference, not this article.

The bus tour, and what to do if you skip it

The trip includes an optional guided bus tour of Marmaris. The schedule on the page, valid from 1 May to 31 October 2026, runs like this: the coach leaves at 10:45 am, with a 30-minute guided drive, a 10-minute photo stop at a viewpoint over the town, and 40 minutes at a jewellery shop called the Marmaris Gold Center. Then comes about four hours of free time in the town centre, from 12:20 pm to 4:20 pm, and the group is back at the port between 4:20 and 4:35 pm for the return.

The shopping stop is the point of contention. One reviewer called it a tourist trap but not overly high-pressure, and the page’s own review summary says travellers would like the shopping stops to be optional or shorter, and that requests to opt out were honoured. A reviewer who skipped the bus tour simply walked the short way into town and had a good day. So it is a choice, and you can make it on the day.

Four hours in Marmaris

The bazaar, the castle, the old town and the marina are all within easy walking distance of the drop-off point, according to the schedule. The castle is a five-minute walk uphill, and the page also points to the old town’s traditional houses, a museum with finds from Knidos, Datça and several shipwrecks, and a 10-kilometre beach and promenade where you can swim. A guide’s lunch recommendation is mentioned by one reviewer as a good one.

Four hours is enough to see the centre once and sit down, but not to go anywhere further.

The honest part

Two crossings plus the passport formalities make this a long day for a small amount of Turkey. If you do not like shopping and you do not want to spend hours at a bazaar, a day on a boat to Symi or a day at Lindos gives you more for the same money, and without a passport. One reviewer thought the boat and the bus could be of a better standard. Another, who has a disability, found it hard to get a seat on the coach, as nothing marks the front seats for people who need them. If mobility is an issue, ask the operator before you book.

The sea can also decide the day. The listing offers free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance, but says nothing about what happens if a crossing is cancelled for weather, so ask about that if you are booking for your last day.

For most people the answer depends on one question: do you want Turkey itself, or just a day out? If you want to say you have been, and you are happy to browse a bazaar, book Marmaris and check your documents a few days ahead. Otherwise the island trips are better value. The Symi options are compared in Symi from Rhodes, the south-east coast is covered in Lindos from Rhodes, and every boat departure is on the Rhodes boat trips page.
